The 24-year-old paceman rocked the Australians during his first over when he picked up the vital wickets of Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting to reduce them to 3-2. Although the batting side rallied to 169-7 it was a double blow they never fully recovered from.
"I was pretty comfortable [with our target] but give credit to Jerome Taylor," said Gayle, "for picking up those two wickets because he actually set the tone for us by setting the Australians back a bit. I was very pleased with the way he started and if he carries on picking up the key wickets then he can be a dangerous player."
Gayle (88) then ensured their bowling efforts were put to good use when he and Andre Fletcher (53) took them to within sight of victory. The left-hander needed just 50 balls to reach his total and he admitted he put his usual laidback style to one side for his examination against the potentially fearsome Aussies.
"I was pretty focused," Gayle explained "and tried not to get too distracted. You don't want to use up extra energy when you are up against a quality team like Australia so I try to keep as much energy when I go out there to bat."
Although generally pleased with the overall performance, Gayle believes there is still room for improvement over what he hopes will be a tournament that will extend to the Super Eights and beyond.
"Hopefully we will make it to the second round and after that we can set different targets up against different opponents. In the ICC world Twenty20 version of the game, I don't know whether it's because it's a short version of the game, but we tend to concentrate a bit better in that format of the game. But at the same time there is still work to do and our biggest downfall was in the field with too many fumbles making it a bit more difficult with the bat for us, so if we can close up that gap a bit then we'll be rounded off a bit more in the batting, bowling and fielding."
West Indies finish off their Group C campaign against Sri Lanka on Wednesday at Trent Bridge, knowing exactly what they will need to do after the other two group members face-up on Monday.
